Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd has highlighted the significant progress made recently in Belfast’s infrastructure development but emphasized the need to accelerate efforts to keep pace with urban innovation in other European cities.
Speaking at a roundtable event hosted by Belfast Chamber in partnership with Marsh Insurance, Minister O’Dowd welcomed the positive impact the new Grand Central Station transport hub is having, while outlining the ongoing challenges presented by the planning process and carbon reduction targets.
The Belfast Chamber event brought together 20 business leaders from key sectors, including utilities, construction and transport, with representatives from organisations such as Belfast City Airport, Phoenix Energy, Power NI, Belfast Harbour, Translink, NI Water, and Farrans.
Minister O’Dowd said:
“Belfast is a vibrant city that has seen exciting, transformative developments such as the Grand Central Station transport hub. However, it is crucial that we prioritise these types of investments to unlock the city’s full potential as we strive to create a more connected, sustainable and attractive place to live, work and invest.
“If we fail to address these infrastructure challenges directly, we risk falling behind European cities whose transport networks are much more advanced. Reducing congestion and promoting the green economy are big drivers of success and we must address these issues to stay competitive and meet sustainability goals.”
He also explained that his key priorities for Belfast during his tenure as Minister include enhancing Belfast’s road and rail networks, improving connectivity, encouraging electric vehicle adoption, enhancing active travel routes, and supporting the city’s long-term growth.

This event was the latest in a series hosted by Belfast Chamber aimed at driving these improvements forward and we will continue to do so on behalf of our members.”
