Aflac NI set for new heights in support of Children’s Cancer Unit

Staff at technology giant’s Belfast office participating in Three Peaks Challenge

19th August 2025:
Aflac Northern Ireland has launched its first ‘Three Peaks Challenge’ in a bid to reach new heights in support of The Children’s Cancer Unit Charity (CCUC).

Staff from the global supplemental insurance giant’s Belfast base are set to take on the three highest peaks in Northern Ireland, with a trek to the Mournes that will see them conquer Slieve Binnian and Slieve Commedagh, with the expedition culminating in an ascent to the top of Slieve Donard.

Taking place on 12th September, during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the challenge aims to raise £10,000. It is just the latest initiative from Aflac NI in aid of charity partner CCUC, which works to support the Children’s Cancer and Haematology Unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital for Sick Children in Belfast.

Sarah Milliken, Head of Talent & Culture Aflac NI, said:

“Supporting children and families affected by cancer is deeply embedded in Aflac’s culture globally, and the determination and enthusiasm from our team to take on this challenge is truly inspiring. Our partnership with CCUC reflects our shared commitment to supporting children and families facing the most difficult of circumstances.

“Every pound raised through the challenge will go directly to the Children’s Cancer and Haematology Unit, helping to provide vital resources in infrastructure and equipment as well as supporting specialised staffing roles, and staff training and development.”

Each year, more than 60 children in Northern Ireland are diagnosed with cancer and blood disorders. Each of them will visit the Children’s Cancer Unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital throughout their journey, as the only place locally where children can receive specialist treatment for cancer.

Jane Hoare, Chief Executive of The Children’s Cancer Unit Charity, added:

“We’re so grateful to the team at Aflac Northern Ireland for once again going the extra mile – literally – for the children, families, and staff we support. Every step they take in the Mournes helps us to take a step forward in improving the experience of young people receiving treatment at the Children’s Cancer and Haematology Unit, and their families.

“Fundraising from initiatives like the Three Peaks Challenge helps us to continue enhancing the world-class care provided at the Unit, while also supporting vital clinical research that is improving outcomes for children affected by cancer and blood disorders.”

Aflac NI’s collaboration with The Children’s Cancer Unit Charity builds on the company’s longstanding global mission to support children diagnosed with cancer and blood disorders, as well as the medical professionals who care for them.

In the United States, Aflac has donated more than $191 million since 1995 to advance treatment and research in this area. The company’s philanthropic footprint also extends to Japan, where it has helped establish Parents’ Houses—safe, welcoming spaces for families to stay close to their children during hospital treatment.

Locally, Aflac NI brought the award-winning My Special Aflac Duck® to Northern Ireland in 2021. These robotic companions are designed to help young patients express their emotions, better understand their treatment, and feel more in control during a difficult and often frightening time. Provided at no cost to families, the ducks are now supporting children right across the region.

To date, more than 38,000 ducks have been distributed worldwide. An independent study conducted at eight U.S. hospitals found they significantly reduced stress and anxiety among young patients and their families.

Aflac NI has been operating in Belfast since 2019 and now employs more than 170 skilled technology professionals, playing a vital role in supporting the company’s global operations and community-focused initiatives.
