In The Spotlight: Lisa is banking on engaging Belfast’s business networks

In the Spotlight this week is Lisa Comerton, head of engagement at Belfast Chamber.

What was your first job?
My first job was at the Crescent Bar, fondly remembered as the home of ‘Sawdust and Soul’. It’s a place that has left a lasting impression on me and sparked my love for Belfast’s unique cultural scene.

What qualifications do you have?
I have a BA (Hons) degree in accounting and finance from Manchester Metropolitan University. After a decade working in banking, I made a career shift into marketing, earning a diploma in digital marketing. I am also member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

What do you attribute your success to?
My success is built on a combination of hard work, a positive mindset, and a strong support network of inspiring people. I’ve always believed that surrounding yourself with motivating individuals drives you to continuously improve, and that’s something I champion within the Belfast Chamber network.

How would you describe yourself to someone who’d never met you?
I’d describe myself as an enthusiastic and approachable person who values communication and is a great listener. I’m diligent in my work and always committed to helping others around me succeed, whether at the Belfast Chamber or beyond.

Who do you look up to in business?
I look up to leaders who are visionary, innovative, and committed to creating positive change. I admire business leaders who not only build successful businesses but also foster strong, inclusive company cultures where teams thrive and feel valued.

How do you get the best out of people who work for you?
I’ve always found that the best way to get the most out of people is to create a respectful and empowering working environment where people feel trusted and confident that they can get the job done.

If you could change one thing about doing business in Northern Ireland, what would it be?
If I could change one thing, it would be to address the slow pace and sometimes fragmented decision-making here. Northern Ireland needs a more cohesive, forward-thinking approach that promotes collaboration across sectors, breaking down silos to propel us forward as a dynamic business community.

What website or app could you not do without?
LinkedIn is essential for staying connected and up-to-date professionally. For a bit of escapism, I enjoy Instagram, especially for travel photos, food posts, and the occasional meme.

What was the last book you read?
The last book I read was Frankie by Graham Norton. I don’t often get the time to read, but it was a New Year’s resolution of mine to make more time for it in 2025.

What car do you drive?
Mercedes A Class

Tell us something interesting about yourself?
After graduating from university, I travelled around Australia and Asia, like many students, but one of the highlights was sky diving onto Mission Beach in Queensland. I also hold a PADI driving licence and had the amazing experience of diving in the Red Sea.

What’s your greatest passion outside work and family?
I’m passionate about cooking and entertaining, especially with friends and family at the weekend. There’s nothing better than getting together with friends and loved ones for a delicious meal and having the craic. Whether I’m hosting a dinner at home or exploring one of Belfast’s many incredible restaurants, I just love the mix of good food and great company.
